Sounds like a great combination …
The cooperation between the Westminster Choir College from Rider University and the ActiLingua Academy makes it possible. The Language of Lieder programme offers you the unique opportunity to combine your passion for music with a German course.
And which city could be better for this than Vienna? Probably none, because it is regarded as the world capital of music and was already a source of inspiration for great artists like Schubert, Brahms, Strauss, Beethoven and Mozart.
The three-week programme includes:
- Intensive classes with leading music coaches currently teaching in Vienna
- Master classes by Prof. Wolfgang Holzmair, Prof. Norman Shetler, Prof. Walter Moore, Elem Eley & Bern Froehlich
- A final concert at the Schubert Geburtshaus (Franz Schubert’s birthplace).
- Regular German classes at ActiLingua Academy
Accommodation is provided by ActiLingua. The programme also includes varied leisure-activities. One evening is spent at a typical Viennese restaurant, the so called “Heuriger”, where students enjoy typical Austrian specialities and a unique atmosphere. During their leisure time, the students love to explore the heart of Vienna with its fascinating and impressive buildings and the varied architectural styles. Especially the two churches “Augustiner-” and “Jesuitenkirche” seem to be popular hotspots among the students. The many stages and theatres in our city promise a rich cultural offer every day. Whether a visit to the State Opera, a tour through one of the countless art museums or a walk along the famous “Ringstraße”. There is enough to explore while staying in Vienna.
What makes this programme so special?
The Language of Lieder programme is based on the combination of music and language learning. In order to present German songs authentically, it is important to manage the language and to understand the culture of the country. Due to the intensive work with the German language, the regular singing classes as well as the different music lessons, students have the opportunity to experience the Viennese music history with all its facets.
Language of Lieder 2017
This year, 14 students participated in the Language of Lieder programme. They all came from different universities in the USA and Canada to work on their musical abilities in Vienna and learn German. The closing concert on June 25th at Schubert’s Birthplace was a huge success and left a lasting impression on both visitors and the students themselves. Together with their music professors they celebrated their great performances and spent a wonderful evening at Café Weimar.
Jessica, USA: “In the USA there are many of these summer music programmes , which offer the exact same content as this one. However, if I had decided for another, I would have missed the chance to learn German from native speakers and experience what the great composers once experienced. It feels so authentic to be here at this place, where once artists such as Brahms, Beethoven, Mozart or Schubert lived. “
